How We Work

The first, very important step in the process is to make sure we are a good fit for each other. To learn more about that please read my Who I Work With page.

Once we decide to move ahead, there are a number of core principles that will underlie all the work we do together.

Start with a blank page

I don’t give you countless questionnaires to complete, nor present you with off-the-shelf portfolios from which to choose. We start by sitting across from each other with a blank sheet of paper.

We’ll map out what’s important to you, where you are and where you want to go. I’ll probably ask you questions that no other financial advisor has asked you, such as “Do you want to save less?” or “Do you want to invest more conservatively?” We’ll get to the heart of your vision for the future and work from there.

Say it how it is

I’m what’s known as a straight-talker.

I’ll be very open with you, use plain english instead of industry jargon, and give you my honest opinion at every stage. If I don’t know the answer to a question, I’ll tell you that too and then go to work to find what you need. I keep in touch with a range of specialists we can call upon to ensure you get the very best solution.

I don’t accept commissions for recommending one product or service over another – I am absolutely transparent in my dealings and my only loyalty is to you.

Work as a team

In addition to the specialists I can call upon as needed, I’m more than happy to meet with your other advisors (accountant, lawyer, insurance agent) to ensure every aspect of your financial life is coordinated and on track.

This is not about competition or ‘winning’ people over to my way of thinking – my priority is to genuinely work as a team and pull together to achieve your goals.

Deliver continuity

What I do isn’t a product – a financial plan isn’t something to do once and then forget for two, five or ten years. This is a truly personalized service and I’m your ongoing financial partner. There will be regular reviews and updates, and when the market changes, the economy changes, or your circumstances change, I’ll be there to make sure you’re in the best position. To support this service, I have a fee structure (minimum $6,000 per year) that is typically paid quarterly or monthly.

Seek a balanced approach

Some planners would have you so scared of the future that you’re afraid to spend any money. They’ll also encourage you to take on as much investment risk as you can bear, regardless of whether it’s actually necessary.

I take a very practical approach to financial planning – one that strikes a balance between being well prepared for tomorrow and having the lifestyle you desire today. I also believe you need only take on as much risk as will allow you to confidently reach your most important objectives.
